GIVING at antioch
THE GENEROUS LIFE
God has given us himself – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – and the fullness of his love as a gift for us to receive. This is the ultimate act of generosity! It wasn’t just a one-time gift either, but a continual self-giving love that never stops. In the same way, we are called to be radically generous people with our time, our gifts, and, most importantly, our financial resources.
Why is this an important part of Christian discipleship?
Giving is a clear command from Jesus that he freely and joyfully practiced. As followers of Jesus, we are commanded to model his generosity and proclaim his glory through giving, even to our enemies! (Luke 3:11, 6:30; 2 Corinthians 9:7)
Your generosity has a profound impact on your heart and your life as mentioned above. It also impacts the lives of other people. Your giving to Antioch, allows the church to have the resources to carry out the call God has given us to share and multiply the life of Christ! Your giving can also make a kingdom impact in other areas such as the fight against human trafficking, care for the poor and the refugee, church planting in other nations, sustainable environmental efforts, disaster relief and on and on. Finally, your generosity can be the breakthrough someone else needs. Giving directly to a person or partnering with community to meet a need through giving, be it money, a car, clothes, furniture, or a house, is a powerful expression of love and demonstrates the generosity and provision of the Father (Proverbs 3:27-28; Matthew 25:31-46; Romans 12:13; 2 Corinthians 9:6)
Generosity requires trust that God will provide not only for us, but also through us as we give money for the good of others and to see His Kingdom advance! Generosity not only builds our faith, but is a declaration of our faith in God (1 Chronicles 29:10-14; Matthew 6:24; 2 Corinthians 9:8-14)
Your generosity will result in blessing for you too. This is a spiritual principle that we have always found to be true. This is also an often abused principle that comes from our western culture’s love and desire for money. Your generosity will result in blessing. That may be freedom from the deceit of riches, stronger, more intimate community, deeper faith in the Father’s good provision, and it may be financial provision. Make no mistake, there is a cost to living a generous lifestyle, but the blessing always outweighs the cost because God is a good Father! (Matthew 6:19-34; Acts 4:33-35; Acts 20:35).
Our American culture has a high value for material wealth that shapes our identity, our wants, and what we live for. Jesus, however, offers a countercultural freedom from the idolatrous pull of money on our hearts through radical generosity. (Matthew 6:19-24).

How much?
Ten percent? Before or after taxes? Do I give to the church only? Jesus never gave us an amount. He just encouraged us to be generous. Jesus does not focus on the amount but praises the act of sacrificial generosity (Luke 21:1-4). Paul, in 2 Corinthians 8:12 encourages us to give according to what we have (within our means) and later in the same letter (9:6), Paul says that when we sow (give) sparingly, we also reap (receive) sparingly. So he encourages cheerful, lavish giving (9:7).
Let’s be honest, depending on your income and resources, giving 10 percent (a tithe) may be an immense financial burden for some, whereas for others, 10 percent is not a difficult stretch. So, rather than asking God, “How much do I need to give?,” what if we instead ask “How much do I need to keep?” Let God drive your giving and be radically generous everywhere and in every way!
